I really tried to be restrained this year when I ordered seeds. Of course, that didn’t really work. Even with my best intentions at play, we’ll have enough seeds for a garden 2-3x the size of ours. Ah well, we’ve got seeds for 2011 as well I think.

I’ve marked the seeds from 2008 and 2009 that we have only a few seeds of in gray - we’ll use those up, but there really aren’t many left. New varieties for 2010 are marked in green.

  • Laura, did you order onion sets or seeds? I was pretty disappointed in the germination rate and yields from my onion seeds last year.

  • I used transplants (different than sets) in 2008 and seeds in 2009 and I’ll never do seeds again :( I had very little success and they were a serious PITA.

I ordered transplants this year from Irish Eyes in Eastern Washington. (http://www.irisheyesgardenseeds.com/index.php?cPath=33_58_217_226)

In 2008 I ordered from Territorial, but they were more expensive than Irish Eyes and I suspect are sourcing their starts from the same place.

I ordered Copra, First Edition and Red Zepplin onions plus Summer Leeks and I’m planning to pick up Walla Walla sweet transplants at the farm store like I did last year.

You can consistently get transplants for Copra, Walla Walla and a red at the Country Store in Stanwood for significantly less than a single bundle online ($5.99 each I think). I just decided to order ahead to make sure I got what I wanted, plus since I ordered 2 bundles of each I got them for about $8.50 each which was cheap enough for me.

I’ve had good luck starting my onions inside with fresh seed. Direct planting has been very iffy, and Steve Solomon ( in his Vegetable Gardening in the Maritime Northwest, I think) says that can be a symptom of garden symphalyns. Also, I’ve found, by making the mistake, that onions don’t like to grow in ground that had brassicas last year. Then I read the same thing in a gardening book. :)
