There’s a chick!

I was all prepared to come write an update about what’s been going on here. But then I went to clean the coop tonight and found a surprise. Agnes was more pissed at me than usual, but I wanted to check on the eggs before I moved her to the puppy crate tonight, so I lifted her up and found a piece of shell! Not what I expected. Apparently someone didn’t get the memo about needing 21 days to hatch.
She’s got a pretty little banty chick in there. I didn’t poke around much beyond that, but I think from the shell color that it’s the Serama/Silky cross egg. The chick is black and white with tiny little fuzzy feet. I think we’ll call her Chickadee. My grandpa always believed that you needed a theme for every batch of new babies, so this time it will be birds that remind me of spring. Here she is.
I’m not sure what will happen with the other eggs. I think only two of the three are viable, but it would be a bummer if Agnes didn’t continue to sit until they hatch. Obviously someone else was sitting on this one for a day or two before I got it. The other two that are still good may also have been already going, but I’m not crossing my fingers on that. Sooo, hopefully she’s patient enough to sit there until Thursday or Friday when they’re scheduled to hatch. Otherwise, bummer.
I moved mamma and baby and entire nesting box to the puppy crate in the shed for some peace and quiet. I’m going to keep them there for at least two weeks, maybe longer, and then put them back in with the big girls. I’ve got a lot of other things to say, so I’ll post this and then continue in another moment.
