Chick Watch Update #1
Jun 28th, 2007 by Laura
So, we almost had chick catastrophe today. I got home from work and went out to check on Agnes and DeeDee. I could hear the chick peeping quite loudly, and Agnes sounding alarmed, but it was quite dark in the shed (rainy day here) and I couldn’t see into the crate. I headed back to the house to get a headlamp, my cell phone rang and I talked to my friend Heather for a while and threw the ball for Jake. About 30 minutes after my first check I headed back out. Shouldn’t have waited.
Turns out DeeDee had managed to wedge herself between the box and the side of the crate. She did not look good when I rescued her - her wings were straight up in the air over her back and she couldn’t stand up. I wasn’t sure what to do so I put her back under her momma while I went in seach of a heatlamp and some sugar water. About 30 minutes later she looked better but not great. I came in, checked with my mom (hi mom!) because who else do you call with a chick emergency? We decided that my grandpa would have brought her in the house with a heatlamp and kept an eye on her. So I went out to get her - she’s looking A LOT better now. Enough so that I left her with momma and promised to check again in an hour.
In other news, both the green eggs, bantam and standard, have pipped. Hopefully we’ll have chicks before bedtime. Anyone know how long it’s supposed to take after they pip? Hopefully all the chaos and shifting around of Agnes, the nest, DeeDee and the eggs won’t have messed anyone up on their hatching. So many things to worry about tonight! Hopefully update #2 will be more positive.
Oh, and just when I wrote Pru off yesterday, she layed an egg today. A nice big one. Huh. I really can’t figure her out. Are cochins bad layers? Maybe that’s our problem.
