Okay, so he’s not a real rooster. What did you expect? We live in the city and our neighbors already sometimes comment on how noisy the hens can be in the morning. But, I thought he would look nice on the front steps with my tomatoes and cucumbers. Oh, you didn’t know we had those? Well, we didn’t until Saturday. I was at the garden store for something else and they had these sad looking left over starts. And I’m a sucker. And I got sucked into 4 new plastic 5 gallon pots, dirt, 2 tomato plants (cherry) and 2 cukes (1 pickling, 1 slicing). We’ll see if we get anything before winter sets in – they may turn out to just be pretty decoration.
Back to the rooster. I named him Rufus because I like that name – it was suggested a couple of times for the red chick. But I just can’t bring myself to give that chick a boy’s name – I really want it to be a hen so that she can stay. So I gave the name I really like to a rooster that can stay.
We’re also going to take Rufus with us on our cross country trip to Ely, MN at the end of the month. We’re going to take his picture at all the funky tourist attractions we visit like the world’s largest dairy cow, sandhill crane, musky and walleye. As well as the Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Mt Rushmore and a building shaped like a teapot. Hey, it’s 4,000 miles roundtrip through some fairly flat, dusty (and dare I say boring without getting flamed?) country. Have to entertain ourselves somehow. And since none of our friends or neighbors have a garden gnome we can steal, Rufus gets to take the trip of a lifetime.

I love the cross country garden gnome photo op! We did it one year on vacation but with a sock monkey. And you can’t beat the name Rufus. Rufus Wainwright has an amazing voice. All of a sudden I’m thinking of that crooning rooster from a looney tunes cartoon with Foghorn Leghorn.
I think Rufus will be a great traveling companion! Have a wonderful road trip and I’m looking forward to your photos.
I’m not sure if I’ve been through Ely, but my mom grew up in Grand Rapids, so I’ve seen that area, and went through Hibbing once. But a road trip there and back sounds terrific.
Thanks Chelee!
The Foghorn Leghorn comment cracks me up – Mike keeps saying he wants a rooster that looks him just so he can name him that. I looked for a white one, but none was to be found.
Kris,
We’re looking forward to it. It’s one of my favorite places to go. We’ll be driving right through Grand Rapids on our way – we’ll be sure to wave to your mom.
