We’re famous in Canada!
Aug 8th, 2007 by Laura
So as some of you might remember, I took some photos for a magazine back in July. That magazine was Maclean’s of Canada I was also interviewed by their very nice contributing editor Julia McKinnell for the article she was working on about chickens in Seattle. I’ve been waiting with baited breath ever since to see if I would get a good or bad quote in addition to the photo of the girls that they decided to include.
The issue finally came out last week and I excitedly called all the newsstands around Seattle trying to get a copy. Turns out that Maclean’s isn’t exported to the US anymore. Their very gracious Associate Photo Editor, Jeff Harris, mailed me three copies but I had to wait until I got home at 2:00 am last night to see it.
And wow! Turns out that I got a lot more than a photo credit and a single quote! I got an awful lot of ink for being a simple urban chicken farmer with 4 hens. A few things I wish I hadn’t said quite the way I did, but that’s okay, I think it comes off okay, especially considering it way my first personal interview ever…
If you’re in Canada, go pick up a copy of the August 13 issue on newsstands now. The article is titled “Chicks in the City” and is on page 59. My understanding is that it will be up on the website sometime later this week or next week.
For those of us not in Canada, I’m posting a low-res PDF scan (1.8 mb) of the article. Hopefully Maclean’s won’t mind me sharing my first time in press with all of you!
Wow, my first 15 minutes of fame, such as it is!

Hello!
Very nice; fun article! We have actually been trying to start a local chicken messageboard here in MN. W informally have a group where we call around when a chicken starts doing something odd; it IS nice to have other advice!
Congratulations, Laura. Great to see you and your chicks make the leap into Main Stream Media!
Laura,
Fantastic article! Love your hens in the city!
I appreciate the complexity of the whole subject. Too many local ordinances and governing agencies butting in where they need not. Hopefully more people fight the system to be able to have the animals they want.
For chicken coop heaters, etc. check out what I have to keep the birds warm.
