Dark Days Challenge Poll
Jan 2nd, 2008 by Laura
Alright, based on the comments on this week’s wrap-up and the emails I’ve gotten, it seems that maybe we should keep this going. If we do, I need some help making that happen, hence my first try at adding a couple of poll questions.
*****
Would you participate if the Dark Days Challenge continued through March?
- Absolutely! (88%, 22 Votes)
- I’d have to think about it… (12%, 3 Votes)
- Not a chance (0%, 0 Votes)
Total Voters: 25
*****
If the challenge continues, would you be willing to be a guest recap writer?
- I’d love to (68%, 13 Votes)
- Only if you make me (26%, 5 Votes)
- Not a chance (5%, 1 Votes)
Total Voters: 19
*****
If you vote to continue with the challenge, or are thinking about it, leave a note in comments. If you’d be willing to be a guest writer for either a full recap or just a region, please also leave a note in comments with how often you’d be willing to contribute.
Here’s how I envision it could work.
- We continue on with the existing rules and recaps posted either Sunday or Monday night.
- We would go until the end of March with the last recap posted on April 5 - that’s 14 weeks
- I’ll handle every third week and the others would be covered by either a single guest writer, a rotating list of guest writers or a set or rotating team and posted here.
I’ll wait to figure out exactly how the guest writing would work until we’ve decided if we’re continuing. Voting is open until noon next Wednesday. We need at least 15 people committed with an “absolutely!” in order to continue.
Thanks!
I voted for my own poll - how lame am I? As I said above I’m happy to continue and to write, but only with help. hint hint
I’m definitely down with keeping it going and helping to do so. Farm to Philly is taking over One Local Summer from Liz, so it would be good practice for me!
Definitely in for the challenge. And as you know, I’m in for weekly or rotating guest posts, whatever you decide!
(LOL, though - organizing the posting is in itself going to be work for you. But I’m glad you’re up for it!)
Hey, Laura! I’d love to keep on keepin’ on. I don’t mind guesting, or helping out with a region. We could also go to twice per month instead of every week if helps everyone out?
Happy New Year!
Happy to guest-recap (again) occasionally. It was a lot of work, and I fully understand your reluctance to devote an evening every week to the recap! Maybe we can make it a little easier if we get (a) an updated list of continuing participants (the week I subbed for you, it seemed like so many people had stopped playing long ago, and never mentioned it) and (b) a commitment from participants to tag their posts as “Eat Local Challenge” or “Locavore” or something similar, to help the recappers find the relevant posts without spending a lot of extra time. Reducing the recap and/or post frequency is also a good suggestion, as Kim mentions.
I’d be happy to throw my hat in as a guest recapper, whenever you need me! I am also on board with the idea of updating the list of participants and even reducing the recap posts to twice a month. I am looking forward to seeing what other bloggers unearth from the depths of their freezers. (And I always vote on my own polls!
I’m new to your blog and to local eating, so although I can’t participate this year, I’m learning so much from everyone and really enjoying the reading! I’m very appreciative to have such an inspirational network out there. Just wanted to add another perspective!
I’m happy to help in any way. I like the idea of doing just a region…maybe if we put it down to twice a month then we’d just need 1 person per region per month? That’s 2 recaps of just your region a month? I’d be ok with that. It DOES seem like a ton of work - thank you for doing it!
I’ve been tagging mine WinterEatLocalChallenge so I think tagging can be requested…although perhaps some sites don’t have tagging abilities?
My CSA just stopped 3 weeks ago, so the push til March is truly going to be my challenge. I have a huge root cellar in the basement, but things are already wilting…I need to start cooking and freezing NOW.
Anyway, count me in for anything!
I would love to keep it going, and I would be happy to be a guest recap writer for my region (the east :). I think tagging the posts or at least titling them with Dark Days of Winter is a good idea. That’s what I usually did to make it easier for you ;). Also, it would be good to get a list of who is participating.
Now off to post today’s local eating :).
I’d love to continue, but I don’t think I’m up for more than twice a month. I’d love to help with recaps, though! Dividing the work up by region sounds like a really good idea. Thanks, Laura, for all your hard work!
I’m eager to participate and would love to help out with the recaps–but not during the month of February (a really busy month for me). What a great idea this was!
I’m absolutely on board to keep up the eat local challenge/fun. And happy to help wherever you need it. The twice a month recap is a good idea and sounds manageable. I’ve been awed at the work you (and the guest writers) have put into the recaps and glad that you’re willing to keep it going with some help. It’s going to be a good year!
I’m in too. I had to think about it for awhile, as I was a little relieved when I made my last DDWELC post. But I think it was more related to the hectic time (hoildays) than actually wanting to be done with the challenge. Anyway, I’m willing to help with the recaps too.
I don’t get around to blogging it as often as I should, but I am doing my best to keep eating locally ever since you gave doing so at this time of year a clever name.
Laura, I would definitely like to continue participating. But, as a very much rookie blogger (having just started with this challenge), I’m not sure I know enough to deal with the recaps. Possibly I could be coached through the process, but that would be more work for you or someone. If there is some way I can help, I would be glad to do so. Thank you for giving me the motivation to do something I have intended to do for quite a while.
I’d love to continue and would be very willing to do a guest recap. I think it makes total sense to rotate the recaps through, as I’m sure it’s a tremendous amount of work to do every week.
I’d like to join and to continue through March. I haven’t officially participated in the challenge yet so I’m not sure if you’re still taking newbies. I have a year round farmer’s market (yeah!) and we eat a lot of local stuff for most of our meals. I would be happy to do a recap - most particularly a regional one .
Wow! What a response! Looks like we’ll be continuing on. Newcomers are more than welcome as a number of the original participants seem to have dropped out. I’ll leave this open until next Wednesday (Jan 9) as planned. If you’re new and want to join in, be sure to vote and then add your name and location to the list.
Now I just have to figure out how to do the guest writing. There won’t be a recap this week as I like the idea of moving it to every other week instead. I’ll post updated rules and a recap schedule early next week.
Thanks all!
This is so great that you’re willing to continue this! I wish I could volunteer to take on a weekly recap, but doubt that I am able to keep the promise. What with researching food, finding food, then preparing the food, there isn’t always time to write about said food (as can be evidenced from the post rate on my own blog)!
Perhaps a viable alternative: if the time-drain of the weekly recap is the show stopper, how about if you make the initial Weekly Recap post and leave it up to the participants to do their own recaps in the comments?

Sorry, just found the poll today. I will probably continue the challenge into May, which is when the majority of farmer’s markets will reopen again, I think. I could certainly write the recap or at least my region once a month if you like.
I’m a newcomer, and since my blog is already focused on incorporating local ingredients into recipes, I would like to join the Dark Days Challenge through March. I live in New York City and we have plenty of farmers markets here to keep me eating local.
