While we wait, I bake
Jan 6th, 2008 by Laura
We did it. We made an actual offer this afternoon. Of course it’s likely to be countered and it’s contingent on a whole slew of things including well, septic and home inspections and the sale of our house. But hopefully we’ll be able to come to an agreement, the new home will pass muster and our current home will sell quickly.
Until then we wait. I won’t bore you with a description of our diamond in the rough until we’ve at least got an accepted sale and purchase, and likely not until it’s passed inspections later this week. So until then you get to wait too.
While we’re waiting I’m baking from my new copy of The Essential Baker. First up is the Cranberry Walnut Scone recipe. Of course I had a brain fart and packed my food processor when I packed up kitchen clutter. That was a dumb move. So instead I had to chop walnuts and cranberries by hand, which means that we have chunky scones. But man do they taste and smell good. Next time I might add a touch more sugar.
Since I followed the recipe exactly, I won’t post it here.

The scones look yummy! And best of luck on the house!
Laura, your ending comment about not posting the recipe reminds me of some questions I have about the protocol for putting recipes on a blog. It seems clear that a recipe directly from a published cookbook would not be OK, but that a recipe of your own would be fine. But, is there some level of modification to a recipe that moves it over to the latter category? And, what about recipes from a newspaper? Is it OK to share those if you give a citation?
Thanks.
Joan as far as I understand you can’t actually copyright a recipe, just the way it’s written. Still, I usually only include a published recipe if it’s obscure and hard to find, or I’ve made a change or two that I think are important. And I always include credit if I post someone else’s recipe. Does that help?
Yes, this is helpful. Being new to blogging as well as to eating local, I want to stay on the right side of blogging protocol (not to mention the law). I really appreciate people who write cookbooks (or any books) and don’t want to undermine their sales. Thank you, Laura.
