It’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks. We found a house, listed our house, lost a house, found another house and now are putting the final touches on the second house (details tomorrow). Cooking is hard to do when you’re trying to keep your house perfectly clean at all times. I’m not a clean kitchen person, the dinner dishes often get done the next morning or even the next afternoon. So having to keep my kitchen spic-and-span is killing my desire to cook.
Dinner around here has been a very simple affair recently. Our dinners for the past few weeks have consisted mainly of things that only require one pan and a minimum of dishes. Think fresh pastas with pesto, grilled sandwiches, salad, scrambled eggs and things on the grill.
I’m not sure that any of them are worth writing about. What I’ve been impressed with is how easy it’s been to eat local even when we’re no longer eating anything close to gourmet. Especially since Saturdays have been impossible for me to find the three hours required to go to the farmer’s market.
Our eggs, milk, butter and meats are always local since we’ve got either a put-by supply or reliable sources. The “nice” grocery by us usually has local potatoes, carrots, onion and garlic plus fruits like apples and pears. We’ve got a supply of green beans, asparagus and corn in our freezer, and Cascadian Farms frozen veggies are available at said grocery as well. There are a couple local bakeries, we’ve got local jams and honey. We’ve even got access to local fresh pasta and sauces for when I’m feeling really lazy.
So even though it feels like we’ve been “cheating” I don’t think we’re really eating any less local, organic or sustainable than we were in November. Of course I have been a bit more willing to decide that I’m okay with organic lettuce, cucumber and green onion from California when I’m craving a salad. Seasonal is nice, but when you need a salad in January, you need a salad.
That all said, thanks to all of you for continuing to participate and write about. I’ve been peeking in on your posts the last two weeks and continue to be impressed by your resourcefulness and your dedication. Stay tuned for this Sunday’s post by Nicole (East), Melinda (West) and Anne (Middle). Can’t wait to read all about it!
