Who’s really paying for your factory chicken?

Okay, so this is a bit of a downer for a light hearted holiday. But hey, we’re home from dinner and the night is pretty much over anyway.
If you’re not convinced that you should re-consider your meat sources for the welfare of the animals you’re eating perhaps you’ll do it for the people whose health it’s ruining?
Thanks to the Ethicurean for alerting my attention to the excellent 6 day series the Charlotte Observer is running on the factory poultry industry and it’s effect on worker health. It’s an insightful, Pulitzer deserving report on how processing thousands of birds a day is not only bad for the birds and your stomach, but also for the underclass that does the work.
Tomorrow is the last day. Take a moment and check it out - you’ll never look at a chicken nugget the same way again.

Well, this answers my question about why Southern chickens are so cheap in the store, despite the increased shipping costs.
So now I have a stupid question - you like chicken and don’t want to stop eating it. Where can you buy chicken that isn’t processed this way? I’m sure someone out there is more savvy than I am and can educate me…..
Okay, I feel silly. 5 minutes of googling has answered my question, although if others have favorites, I’d love to hear them.
