Dark Days 2008 Week #4: The East

It’s Kim, filling in for the East this week.  I feel like a bit of a heretic making the update this time around, as I’ve had my least-inspired cooking period yet.  My meals still contain lots of local foods, though, and I feel re-energized by getting a peek at what everyone else is up to.

My most local meal came right around the time of the giant ground beef recall.  Not only did we laugh in the face of nasty New Hampshire weather by grilling t-bones outside, but we were happy to have safe, local beef to enjoy.  The potatoes from a business associate of my husbands were outstanding!  Nothing like a crispy, almost creamy roasted potato!

Recovering from the cold that many of us have passed around, Nicole over at Farm to Philly experimented with frozen tofu in her chili.  Pretty much all of the chili was local, right down to that tofu!  It sure looks good, and would probably be just the thing for getting over a cold.

Speaking of cold medicine, The Purloined Letter made chicken soup.  Not only does it look great, but she made it in the slow-cooker, so it seems like it would be an excellent work day meal.

img_1079.JPGDanielle at Touch the Earth Farm didn’t do a lot of cooking while her husband was in Japan, and then she caught the cold, too!  She fought it with some leftover homemade turkey soup and lots of tea and honey.  When she was feeling better, she made homemade angel hair pasta with local spaghetti sauce and meatballs.  Yummmmm!

Over at Locavores, Sophie has been cooking up a storm!  She enjoyed butternut squash ravioli, shortribs and rib eye!  I’m impressed by the motivation she seems to have with these meals, including pairing them with local wine.  She might be just the kick in the pants I need!

sauerkraut006.jpgI always drool when I visit Ed over at The Slow Cook.  Not just because his meals always look great, but because he is so much further south than I am, that he enjoys some great local foods all year round.  But his highlight meal this time around is something I could enjoy here (with a little planning ahead, of course).  Choucroute is basically a French sauerkraut dish that includes a good amount of pork products!  I pretty much wish Ed lived next door so I could come to his dinner parties (this one included a mushroom frittata and LOCAL salad - oh, to have local greens!).

Braised food was on the menu at The Wounded Chef.  Julia was kind enough to include the recipes for her braised lamb shanks and braised cabbage.  Who wouldn’t want to come home to that kind of yummy food?  She even baked bread, experimented with crackers, and whipped up some hummus with Kale.  I feel warm all over.

It was great to fill in this week and see what everyone was up to.  I apologize if I missed anyone’s entry, feel free to berate me and fill us all in by leaving a comment!
