The End of an Era
Feb 27th, 2008 by Laura
For eighteen months I’ve been writing here about city chickens and living locally in the city. Now that era is coming to a close. This will be my last post as the Urban Hennery and I’m a bit sad about it. The hens will no longer be downtown girls, but instead country girls. I’ll no longer be a country girl wannabe but an actual country girl.
I thought I’d take a minute to look back at some of my favorite posts before we move on to the next era.
- I finished the coop and introduced Agnes
- We got our first egg
- Our first two chicks hatch to Phyllis
- The girls went for their first free range foray
- We joined the One Local Summer challenge and started filling the freezer
- Agnes hatched out another 3 chicks
- The girls became famous in Canada
- I learned to can and put away pickles, peaches, tomatoes and apples
- We stashed corn and green beans in the freezer
- The Dark Days Challenge was born and born again
I hope that you’ll continue to tune in as we start trying to figure out this farm thing and I try to find my new perspective. I promise there will be funny stories of success and failure, pictures of chickens, puppy exploits and gardening adventures. It should be quite the journey.
The blog will be dark until next Monday as we won’t have internet access after today. Please tune in Monday night for our first post as the “Not-So Urban Hennery”. Full credit for the name by the way, goes to Anita who suggested it in jest.
Congratulations. I can’t wait to hear all about the new country home. I’m sure the girls - and you two - will settle in nicely. Happy moving!
LOL — I love it
I know you’ll be so busy with the move, but I’m really looking forward to your “life on the farm” posts.
Cannot wait to see you on the other side! Congrats and good luck on your move.
Congratulations! Love the name/header. As much as it’s possible, enjoy the move and the settling in!
I just found your blog yesterday and am looking forward to reading your past posts and see how things change for you on a farm! I am definitely envious, but will some day make the transition myself to be sure.
Quick question, living in the city—how was your chicken able to hatch eggs? Did you buy fertile eggs or borrow a rooster?
I love the posts. I’ve only recently found your blog and expecially enjoyed your look back at the finished coop. I’m trying to decide a design for our own coop. Yours look very nice.
I’ve been ‘lurking’ behind the scenes for a while now, this is my first time commenting. I want to wish you all the best in your move!! I, too, just moved (1 month ago) from my very city, very urban life to our first place in the country. We are delighting in all the new experiences…even the smelly septic tank!
(not really, but we’re taking it in stride as ‘part of the country life!)
Take care - :-)danni
Anyway, I really enjoyed reading your favorite blog posts that you indicated above. Loved the article on you and your girls, too - how fun.
Hey - I’ve got a number of ‘getting Internet in the country’ stories on my blog, if you’re interested…
Congrats! I’m a little jealous, but don’t see any farming any time soon in our future, so I’ll just enjoy reading about yours!
Congratulations! Good luck to you and your family with the move. I look forward to your new adventures. The new header is perfect!
will be tuning in with great interest, keep on movin’ on
Congratulations on the move, and best wishes! Can’t wait to hear about your adventures in country living!
Thanks everyone - good to know that you’ll still read along now that we’re no longer city folk.
Thank you as well for the kind wishes and congrats, we’re already loving every minute.
