Snug as Bugs

Last night was quite cold for this area, colder than it’s been in more than a month. I was a bit concerned about the girls as at the old house they lived the lives of pampered pets and had a heat lamp on cold nights. But this morning when I went out to check on them before work they looked happy as pigs in s*%t in their new digs. It wasn’t exactly warm in the hen shack, but the water wasn’t frozen and it definitely was warmer than outside.
So far I’m not letting them free range. I’m not sure what the homing instinct timeline is for chickens? But I’m assuming it’s about what it is for cats. So they’re stuck inside until they’ve been roosting there for about 10 days just to be sure that they know where home is at night. Then they can have the run of the place during the day when the dogs are in the barn and we’re at work.
Thanks to everyone that complimented our handiwork! We actually had a lot of fun working on the remodel Sunday. And we’re already chomping at the bit to get started on running fence for the dogs and putting a new roof on the hen shack.
In other news, Jessi sent me some photos of the city coop on it’s journey to it’s new home. As she so eloquently put it, it looks a bit like a “hillbilly camper” up there. I’m still just impressed that it fit into the truck bed and that they got it there in one piece. Apparently my carpentry skills are better than Mike gives me credit for…

One thing I did that worked well when I added new hens to my flock is pen them up a few days and then let them out about 30min to an hour befor the sun sets. They won’t have time to find a new place to roost.
