What a crazy week around here! It’s just been crazy busy at work for me, but low key for Mike. The weather has been awful, so they’ve been a bit slow. Bummer for the company, but nice for him. I on the other hand feel like I haven’t been able to take a deep breath all week.
I didn’t get home until 8:30 tonight, but still I wanted to relax for at least a moment or two before chilling out on the couch. So I decided to start seeds. I actually filled all of my little pots last night, but didn’t have the motivation to actually seed them when I was done.
I decided to use 2″ 4-packs for seed starting this year as it’s likely these will go until late April before they get put in the ground. Not an issue when your start them this late, but I didn’t know it would be March 26th when I bought seeds and supplies back in February.
I’ve got 72 cells going. The herbs are mainly double planted since the herb garden beds are already here and they can likely be split and put in earlier than everything else. Everything got more than one seed in each spot as starting them this late leaves me no time for round two if they don’t sprout. I’d rather thin than be bummed that nothing came up.
Before I go to bed tonight I’m going to take them up to my office and get them situated under the grow light on my desk. It’s really the only spot in the house that’s available right now for this, and the barn is too cold. I’d take a picture, but they’re really not interesting right now. That will have to wait until we have sprouts.
As for the garden beds, it’s been pouring the last week. At this point I think the ground is too wet for much tilling. Although we may try to get the sod lifted off next weekend. Turns out that while the soil is rich, it also has a fair amount of clay in it. We’re going to need to bring in a bit of sandy topsoil to mix in, then put a layer of compost over the top.
To be quite frank, we’re going to be lucky to have it done by the end of April due to other commitments and my traveling for work. Oh well, hopefully we’ll still be in in time to plant beans, squashes, cabbage, broccoli, etc. even if we’re too late for spring lettuce and greens.

I feel your pain!
Snow here in Lake Stevens today too. My poor starters (from the sno-isle co-op) have been sitting on the front porch all week waiting to be planted. It’s still much too muddy and now snow too! I feel like this spring is going to come in two or three hour bursts.
