Mike continues to be the man when it comes to get the veggie garden up. He’s done waaaaay more work than I have so far and it’s supposed to be my project. But then again, I did say all I wanted for my birthday was a veggie garden…
Today he wrangled a favor from a trucking company that they use for work. A driver showed up with 18 yards of wonderful beautiful compost. And since they brought the fancy truck, the one that can throw the dirt / compost where you want it. And so not only did we get 18 yards of compost, it’s all spread in a fairly even 3 - 4 inch layer across the whole garden. So cool.
Of course, because the big chunks fly further there are more fines closer to the driveway than at the other end. But the end that got the coarser compost is where the asparagus and the potatoes are going. I’m guessing they can take it. And the end with all the fines is where we’re putting tomatoes, onions and greens - they should like that.
So yeah. Remember when I said we’d be lucky to have the garden bed in by May? I was totally wrong. I completely underestimated how much Mike could and would be willing to get done while he basically had the week off. Sunday I’m going to turn in the mulch for the onion / leek row and get the starts in. Then I might do the same for early lettuce, carrots, radish and spinach.

In other news, I resisted the urge to acquire a horse this week. In the end I didn’t even go ride him. I thought about it and dreamed about it and realized that no matter how much I loved the idea of him, the reality is we really don’t have time for a horse right now. Or a desire to spend the $2000 that a fence and gates would cost. It’s in the plans, just not this spring. But I am happy to say that Prico found a new owner yesterday. A teenage girl and apparently it was love at first sight.

Congrats on getting the garden started (or rather, congrats goes to hubby!). Can’t wait until you start posting pics and updates of the veggies growing there.
Sorry about the horse not working out. Sounds like he found a good home, though. Your time will come…….
So glad you are getting your garden in. It’s exciting to read about you realizing your dream of country living.

Great man you got there! Congrats on the garden getting started. And sorry about the horse, but it sounds like you made the right decision. Your time will come (and we’ll read about it here, first!).
