Urban Farming in New York
May 7th, 2008 by Laura
On a lighter note, and in keeping with Denise’s comment, here’s another article from the NY Times. If people can figure out how to farm on vacant lots in New York, Brooklyn and Detroit, I guess there’s just no excuse for the rest of us.
It inspires me to see communities pulling together to grow the produce they want and need in areas that are often considered food deserts.
I was at a small, local, independent bookstore the other day, and we started talking about book-ish things. The proprietor said that knowing one’s region is very important in the book business, with which I agreed, and she said, specifically, that people here are more prone to buy gardening books. To which I replied that many people are starting gardens in the city, and she stated, “Maybe in Queens.”
I’m tempted to share this article to her ;).
I’m inspired even more to make my suburban garden “fruitful” so that, maybe it can be an example to my neighbors of what’s possible I’d love to see more garden and less lawn.
