I had a similar discussion with a friend. Our province has introduced a Carbon Tax and there was debate as to whether it unfairly punished rural residents. But my friend pointed out there there are things you can do, choices you can make, other than the way things have "always been done" in rural areas (of course this will depend on several factors; such as just how remote you are). Anyways, your post reminded me of that. Since our family is planning to leave the city for an acreage, I will be considering many of the issues you've brought up re: driving.

Jason and I were just talking about (sort of) this concept this morning. We were looking at the concept of becoming sustainable as compared to starting a business. While we are getting a LOT out of our gardening space, this first couple of years (last year and the current one) are a little more intensive on the front end costs (planters, soil amendments, seeds until you save your own, tools, etc). Also, there is the learning curve where we make mistakes with some of our plantings.

All in all, we figured out that it is a MUCH bigger pay off to go sustainable than it is even to start up a new business (both of which we have as options in front of us currently).

I guess what I'm saying is that we're on the same page as you are right now... okay... maybe not the SAME page but at least the same book??? LOL Whattaya think? Sounds like a good conversation to have over prosecco!

We have similar tradeoffs now that we live in the country. Everything is further away, but on the other side, we own 4 acres of trees and have the space for a garden, orchard, and studio so I can work from home.
