Daily Photo: Sitting Pretty
Jul 8th, 2008 by Laura

Lulu (Lucy) has decided to sit. She’s been there for 3 days so far and is showing all signs of sticking it out. She’s not laying her own eggs though, she’s just stealing all of the ones the other girls lay. Unfortunately she’s right next to the galvanized can that I store the feed in. She gets pissy every time I have to get in there.
She had 8 when I got home today (up from 5 yesterday). I tried to move her so that I could mark the eggs with a pencil so that I can start collecting the fresh eggs and just leave her with those 8. But she wasn’t too happy, and she’s pretty big to try to lift when she’s struggling, and in the process 3 of them got cracked so she’s back to 5. Bummer. So I’ll let her have whatever she can steal tomorrow too and that will be all. At the moment she has 3 banty eggs and 2 full size.
For once I don’t have to go looking for fertile eggs for a broody hen to sit on. Based on the amount of chicken sex happening around here I’m guessing that they’ve been fertilized… We really don’t need any more chickens around here, but I’ve discovered that the easiest way (for me) to deal with a broody hen is to just humor her. Hopefully at least one egg will hatch or there’s no telling how long she’ll sit.
Hey Laura, I have a question for you. My older birds are just getting to the 20 week mark, and I was wondering if you have any suggestions for how to “motivate” them to start laying? Is there anything I need to do, or is it just one of those things that just comes?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

P.S. I think you have my email, you can just write there if you like.
