Mike has competition for my affections from Oscar the mottled bantam cochin rooster.
The hens seem to see me as a big rooster, or at least used to before we actually got a big rooster. Oscar, on the other hand, has decided that I’m a big hen and I am his favorite girl right now.
Anytime he sees, or hears, me he comes running. Or at least trotting as fast as his short little legs can take him. Then he dances around my feet, finds me a tender morsel, and makes sure that I know it’s there. If I’m not quick enough to acknowledge him he then pecks my toes.
It’s really cute since he weighs all of 2 pounds. He’s the friendliest of all the birds right now. I can pick him up and talk to him at eye level. I can perch him on my hand. He’ll sit on my knee when I take a seat in the grass. He can barely stand to be parted from me.
He’s older than this photo now by about 4 weeks. His wattles and comb are much more pronounced. He looks like your classic black rooster - pretty dang gorgeous if you ask me.
Who knew you could get such devotion from a bird brain?

Your not-so-secret admirer is very handsome, Laura. I will confess that I have a crush on the bantam silver Sebright rooster I met on the Seattle Tilth Coop Tour. He doesn’t know I exist.
I have a feeling this will be one that will escape the coq au vin pot.
That’s so cute.
Oh my. It’s getting mighty hard to fulfill my chicken desires vicariously with photos of splendid birds like Oscar and Kimberly’s Sebright rooster.
Awe! That is too cool.
I want a bird boyfriend too(:
He’s beautiful!! But, then, I have a soft spot for roosters right now. I loved the story you told of how he comes running to bring you tasty treats…my Roopert and Pip don’t mind me around, but they certainly don’t bring me treats. You luck girl!
Kimberly - now I want a Silver Sebright too! No more roosters for me though.
Anita - he was always safe from the pot since he’s so tiny, but I was thinking of rehoming him. Now, not so much. He can stay forever as long as he loves me.
Erin - I think so too.
Marcyincny - you’ll have to be next with the chickens…
Michelle - just get a banty rooster when you’ve got full size hens. They develop a thing for big girls!
Farmgirl_dk - your roosters sure are pretty too. It’s funny the things that he thinks are worth pointing out. Today it was a nice juicy weed.
