So what’s the big change you ask (and email)? Well Anita got it right when she guessed that it had something to do with work and a new job. I gave notice at my current company last Friday and start a new position, that I’m very excited about, the first week of August.
I believe that when something is right it’s right. It’s how I knew I should move to Seattle, how Mike and I have stayed together for more than 9 years, how we chose our new farm, how I’ve chosen pretty much every job I’ve had. And sometimes the right thing finds you when you’re least expecting it, or looking for it. And so it is with this new position.
It found me, tapping me on the shoulder when I thought I was perfectly happy with my current company. From the moment that I saw the job title and read the description I knew that it was a job that I wanted. That it was the right job for me. That I could be really good at it. And so I put my hat in the ring and somehow the stars aligned and the powers that be agreed.
As of August 5th I will no longer work in the private sector. Instead I will join our local utility district as their Energy Efficiency Strategic Marketing Consultant. Say that three times fast. It will give me the unique opportunity to combine what I’m good at, marketing, with what I’m passionate about, sustainability.
I’ll be working with a great group of people (I was very impressed by everyone I’ve met) to develop, market and continuously improve programs that get residential, commercial and industrial customers to adopt energy efficient technologies and practices. To use less power. To reduce their impact. To live and work sustainably.
And that is something that I’m very excited about. And also nervous, as I think we all are, as I move to join a new group, a new type of work place, a new focus.
Plus, as an added bonus, a twenty mile shorter commute (less gas) and a lot less travel (fewer airplanes) mean that I’ll get to decrease my carbon footprint.
This is not going to turn into a work oriented blog – there’s too much risk for burnout there. But I will be sharing facts, figures and ideas with you in the coming months. I’ll be looking to make us all more efficient and to try to make a difference in your community as well as mine.

Congrats Laura!! I’m so excited for you! I hope it’s everything you want it to be and more!
Laura, that is just wonderful! I am happy for you. It sounds like it will have quite the learning curve too. I like that about jobs; helps you keep on top of things. It’s great too that there’s a lot less travel involved: more time in the gardens!
Congratulations, Laura! Good for you! Sounds like a great match.
Congratulations! Sounds like a perfect fit. “Do what you love….”
Oh, HOORAY for you!! As I was reading, as soon as I got to the title of the new job, I said to myself, “Perfect!” It sounds like a job description written just for you! The fact that it also provides you a chance to decrease your carbon imprint is icing – plus another reason why it’s ‘your’ job. Congratulation!
Congrats on your move to a job that’s all about sustainability! How very cool. I just left my last job at the beginning of July and start back in August. Here’s to starting over and making life look a little more like you want it to.
Awesome! You’ll really make a difference!
oh, yay. More time to garden
Congratulations, Laura! That’s really exciting news. Are you taking a few days off in between jobs to hang out?
Good for you! It is so wonderful when the things in our lives come into alignment.
Wow! Congratulations! That sounds like a great job!
Right on L~!! Good for you. I wish for such luck but alas I continue in the grind. I hope you love your new position.
P~
A job that combines you love with your talents is truly a blessing! And a rare find~! Congrats.
I have been lax on the return commenting here as I’ve been swamped trying to wrap up at work. Thank you for all the well wishes and encouragement. I really can’t wait to start – it’s hard to believe that a job so tailored to what I’m interested in just dropped in my lap! Stay tuned as it gets rolling.
I hate to rain on this parade, but as a *former* colleague of Laura, this is awful news! She’s a great asset and we’re very sorry to see her go. That said, I’m really excited for her; the job sounds like a perfect fit. Congrats, Laura!
