OLS Week 11 - Burgers!
Aug 24th, 2008 by Laura
This meal wasn’t our most local of the week, but it was shared with Mike’s dad and his wife who we only see once or twice a year. After spending the day working on projects and enjoying each other’s company, we put together a simple dinner of cheese and onion burgers, steamed veggie medley and salad. We planned to top it off with vanilla ice cream and fresh-picked blackberries, but we were so full that we didn’t make it that far. Mike and I will just have to eat it tonight instead (bummer).
Burgers made from the local grass-fed beef in our freezer with Tillamook cheese and homegrown grilled Walla Walla sweet onions. The burger had just a bit of egg (home raised), bread crumb, garlic powder and onion powder mixed in. We ate them on store bought buns with nothing to recommend them other than that they were fresh and the right size.

Our vegetable medley of homegrown snap beans, broccoli and cauliflower with just a bit of butter and imported Italian parmesan on top.

This salad was notable because it included not only lettuce and carrots from the garden, but also homegrown cucumber, bell pepper and tomato. It was the last of our lettuce for a few weeks as we wait for the fall batch to mature.

The blackberries that I picked yesterday afternoon. The vines along our back woods are just starting to ripen - this was the first time there was more than a handful ready. The camera had a hard time focusing on them for some reason. I think they’re a non-native variety but I’m not sure - either way they taste amazing.

Those burgers look mouthwatering! But so does the whole meal.
Be careful of those blackberries if they are Himalayan Blackberries. They taste great but can become a nuisance, as they can grow 20′ a year if left unchecked. But you sure can’t beat them for flavor, for syrups, pies etc., they are definitely worth managing just for the bounty they bring year after year.
Thanks Nita - I went out and looked and I think they are Himalayan. We’re going to go through the field with a brush hog later this fall so hopefully we can beat them back then. Gosh are they good though.
