Fall Cleaning
Sep 29th, 2008 by Laura

Some people wait until spring to get their houses in order, but not us. We always seem to do a big purge and organize right around now. In the past it’s been focused around getting the house in order, and maybe organizing the garage, but this year it started with getting the sheds set for rain and continued to Mike using Sunday to clean and organize the barn.
I wish I could take some credit but I really can’t as I was off enjoying the last farmer’s market of the year, then painting the chicken shack and then picking blackberries. I helped here and there, but mostly the effort was all Mike.
And what a great job he did. It seems like there’s more space in there than ever, even though we moved the ski boat inside for the winter (anyone want to buy a boat?). He managed to move in both the boat and his dirt bike, clean out the third stall for me, and it still feels bigger than before.
The most exciting part though is that the center stall is now mine all mine! The miscellaneous crap that was in there all found new homes, and my new potting table moved in. Now I’ve got to room to work and organize my stuff, and even a propane lantern so I can get things done this winter. Yay.
Here’s my table looking in from the stall door:

The table itself is 4′ x 6′ with a 3′x5′ shelf underneath for storage. It was made almost completely from scraps and salvaged wood. The only new materials were the 2×4’s to frame the top and the plywood for the work surface. I put a quick coat of stain on it (so it would show dirt less).
Just because I’m so excited, here it is from another angle, looking from the barn through the stall. The broilers are in the stall immediately to the right and the dogs hang out in the stall to the left on really cold rainy winter days.

Waiting on the table are my garlic seed and a bag of cover crop seed. Both need to get in this week or next. I can’t wait to be out here potting up spring starts. Underneath are all of my pots, tools, gloves, row cover, organic fertilizer, etc. So nice to have it all in one spot, and so organized!
We’re going to try to get power run out here before seed starting gets rolling in March, but I’m guessing that I’ll be running an extension cord because that’s just the way it goes…
Nice Table! I figure it’s the nesting thing in the fall that makes us want to get organized. If we’re going to be stuck inside we want it all put together. I can see you now with grow lights and starts in the barn, way to go and thanks Mike!
Nice barn! I’m jealous…ours is quite ramshackle, dark and full of nasty cobwebs. Ick.
What a great space! I’m very impressed and hoping to engage my hubby in a round of work shop clean up the first cool day we get. It’s become a junk pile over the summer. Will you be posting pixs of the new paint job on the chicken shack?
I love your new workspace. And I love organizing/purging projects, too. I used to be a packrat in my youth but then I got wise to to addictive nature of getting rid of stuff.
This is when I get motivated to clean house too. In the Spring, I just want to get outside, but this time of year makes me feel like nesting.
