Storing Spuds
Sep 29th, 2008 by Laura
A few of you have asked how we’re storing our potatoes. Well, it’s pretty unsophisticated. This is it, a pile of burlap bags on the floor in the tack room.

There they are sharing space with some fencing and Mike’s welder. The welder could use a new home, but it’s heavy and I’m lazy, so there it sits. The shelves will likely be home to squash sometime in the next few weeks.
We’re considering getting a pallet to put the spuds on. And I’ve got a few cardboard boxes that I really intend to put the burlap bags into, but that hasn’t happened yet.
I’m not completely sure that this will work, but we don’t have a root cellar and this room is pitch black and nice and cool. Even today when it was a 75 F it was cool in here. I got home and checked the spuds and they were all nice and cold to the touch.
Baby spuds, all golf ball size and smaller:

King Harry white potatoes, with a hitchhiking red:

Baby Russian fingerlings. Just waiting for some butter and a quick turn in the oven. Mmmmm.

Hi, I don’t know how I found your blog but I love it! I’m in WA too, down in Vancouver across from Portland. I grew potatoes last year but didn’t get them in the ground in time for this year’s harvest. I’m wondering if you have problems with mice out in the shack where you store yours? We live in an old house that has a detached garage…would that be a good place? I’d like to buy some from the farm at Sauvie’s Island and store them but not sure where an ideal spot is. I have a basement with a built in smallish pantry in the wall between the half basement and the earth but any store bought potatoes that I’ve put in there usually don’t last long with out growing sprouts.
Kathy - I sent you an email. Best of luck!
