Today I found this egg in one of the nest boxes, and every time I look at it this children’s song runs through my head. Except obviously with egg in place of bucket.
I’m not positive, but to me it looks like my egg sucker made an attempt and was interrupted in the act. It could, I suppose, have been a toenail of the second or third hen to lay in that nest box. But I somehow doubt it.
Luckily, even though I put it in my pocket to get it back to the fridge, I didn’t experience an egg/pocket catastrophe like Ali. I have seen my share of those. And if you keep hens and you’ve never had an egg break in your pocket or hand then my hat is off to you. My worst experience involved an egg, my keys and a cellphone. Guess which of three lost that battle?
The membrane is in one piece, but I’m not sure we should store it indefinitely with a hole in it’s natural bacteria barrier. This egg will likely become dinner omelet tomorrow night.

We get those from time to time, especially from younger hens. My take on it is they peck at that “thing” to see what the heck it is. I could be totally wrong on that, though. It usually goes away… but it is always annoying while it lasts.
Oh no! The egg-sucker is back, gack. I agree, sounds best to use it ASAP. Wish there was a way to track down the offender and sort it out though.
I have the crime show theme songs running through my head. . . “Closing in on the . . .egg stealer. . . ”
I hadn’t thought about the pockets for gathering eggs. It seems pretty easy to forget them in there and put your coat away. . . I think I am just going to NOT use the pockets from the beginning.
What do you use in the summers months?
Whoa…great picture, and interesting story. Amazing that the membrane is intact!
The plot thickens! I will admit, I am strangely fascinated by the saga of the egg-sucker.
i’ve had this come up in the last few weeks with my two 10 month old hens. they started laying in august and this is the 1st time i’ve seen it. i recently re-built their nest box and its now smaller, so I am guessing they are stepping on them in the smaller space. i had also slacked off on the oyster shell, so started that up again. we ate the eggs the couple of times we’ve had this happen, with no issues…..who knows..
