I had to go and check if it was a full moon on Friday (nope, it’s on Monday) when I got the three eggs flanking the normal one second from the left above.
Far left is an egg with no yolk. It’s a bit smaller than a banty egg and around here we call them misfires. I usually just feed them to the dogs as they’re not good for much else.
Second from the right is a “standard” double yolker. It’s about 50% longer than a regular egg, and has two smallish yolks in it.
On the far right is the biggest egg I remember seeing, ever. It’s slightly more than 3″ long, about twice that of a regular large egg. I was willing to believe that it might be a triple yolker, but no such luck. It turned out to have two full size yolks inside it. I’m REALLY glad that I’m not the hen that had to lay that egg…
Strangely a big egg is cause for just as much excitement as the smallest egg ever was.
We cracked both double yolkers to make an omelette yesterday morning. Here’s a size comparison of the yolks. On top are the two standard size yolks that came from the huge egg. Below are the two smaller than normal yolks that came out of the more typical double yolker.

I love bright orange yolks. Just another sign that the chickens have been having fun. Your blog is wonderful. I’ve learned a lot from you.
This is incredibly cool.
Wow!
“I’m REALLY glad that I’m not the hen that had to lay that egg…”
This made me laugh. I feel the same way when I hear stories of 10 pound newborn babies.
Double-yolk eggs beg the question…do twin chicks hatch and survive? Anybody know?
Kathleen :: Thanks – I love the orange yolks too!
Jennifer, Pam :: Thanks!
Amber :: Me too
Jimmy :: I’ve always heard that they get to a certain point and then stop developing. That there’s not really enough room inside a single shell for two chicks. No science handy to back that up though
Whoa! That’s all I can say for that hugest egg! I’ve heard the same about the double yolks, that one of them just stops developing after a while since there may not be room or nutrition for both…
i got my first double yolk egg this week and thought the egg was huge! but yours definitely wins. thanks for sharing, your blog is wonderful!
what kind of chicken laid that egg
