I made a comment on Twitter Tuesday night that the beef stew in the oven was “…as close to 100% homegrown as we’ll get unless we invest in cows and a vineyard...” And I meant it. Of course, I was forgetting that we can totally make a 100% homegrown meal anytime we want to, just not beef stew.
Tonight’s dinner came together in a bit of chaos and it was literally on my plate when I realized that it was 100% homegrown except for he salt, pepper and olive oil. And wow, was it good.
One of this spring’s broilers was slow roasted on the grill (almost the only way we cook them) and the potatoes I dug Tuesday night were roasted in the oven. The cucumber and tomato were simply sliced and put on the plate.
I don’t know about you, but around here summer finds us eating late, long after the sun goes down, and simply. And this, this is one of our favorite dinners. I could eat this once a week and never tire of it.
What’s your favorite summer meal?

What a perfect meal. I can imagine how satisfying it is to eat an incredible meal that came solely from your yard. Nice work!
I agree with Ashley, that must be so satisfying to know you can have a 100% homegrown meal. As for summer meals, going simply seems to work best for me too. Some of my favs are freshly baked bread made into some sort of bruschetta, corn-on-the-cob just picked… peach handpies…
I would have to say chicken from our local farm, roasted. We serve it up with side of roasted potatoes, green beans, corn or whatever veggies are fresh from the garden – MMMMMMM. Simple meals truly are the best!
My favorite summer breakfast – eggs poached in a fresh tomato sauce with a crusty bread to sop up all the goodness.
Maybe not beef stew, but you could make a 100% homegrown chicken cacciatore, right?
my favorite summer meal is a tie: either home-ground burgers on bakery buns with potato salad, or a grilled steak with a caprese salad. Both of these require corn on the cob.
Awesome! That looks great!
This is great! Each meal we look down at our plates and always comment about our homegrown and local-filled plate! It’s so satisfying and empowering.
My favorite meal (especially this time of the year) is anything from the garden. Roasted potatoes and onions on the grill, tomato and cucumber salad, corn on the cob, chicken on the grill or pork roast in the crock pot… it’s all so good!
And yes, dinner is always a bit later and always simple but oh so good.
How great to have a totally homegrown meal that would be my ultimate meal.
