This wasn’t the first ear of corn of summer, but it was the first that really tasted like summer. It’s organic and from Eastern Washington and I could have eaten 4 ears tonight. Alas I only had one.
The running joke around here is that we have Hookers standing around in our garden and that we can’t to bring them inside. Of course Hookers is a variety of sweet corn from Orcas Island that we’re trying to see if we actually can successfully grow corn this year.

The strawberries are still going strong, which surprises me even though it shouldn’t since they’re everbearing varieties. I picked two pints tonight and it looks there’ll be another two pints tomorrow.
How’s your garden growing? What tastes like summer to you?

Summer…. corn of course, but also freshly grilled eggplant, zucchini bread, and ripe strawberries/peaches. Our strawberries are also still coming (the everbearing kind at least). Interesting, this year has been a prime example of the virtues of everbearing strawberries: with the disaster that was June (rain, cold, etc) most of the June-berries never had a chance to come into their own. Now with the warm weather firmly in place, the everbearing kind are shining.
The strawberries look great! I can’t wait until I’m growing my own next year. To me, I know it’s summer when I get to eat a homegrown watermelon!! Those are so good! In my garden right now I’ve got snow peas, broccoli, lettuce, cantaloupe, and carrots! Yum…I wish I were eating it all right now.
So far our summer tastes of zucchini (yellow and green), Swiss chard and broccoli, but beets need to be pulled and processed for the freezer and pint jars. Our Bodacious corn is starting to tassel, so hopefully that will be a nice success this year. The Golden Jubilee should come on in September. We have a much better garden this year than last, and I’m grateful (although I may change my mind later when my 19 tomato plants give me ripe fruits).
Unfortunately, strawberries taste like Spring in our neck of the woods; they are but a memory by mid-June…..sigh.
I would have to say that watermelon and nectarines are our summer favorites right now, but only because we can’t get a decent peach. We finally bought a couple peach trees to replace the ones that died a few years ago so maybe next year …..
Our marionberries are going strong right now. We’ve already harvested 40 pounds which have gone into the freezer and the pantry in the form of jam. As for vegetables, we are starting to be loaded with different varieties of beans. I have heard that they can survive in the freezer well if they are blanched first. Do you have any experience / advice on how to do this and how well it works? We’ll have loads more than we can eat straight, and don’t really like canning vegetables. Thanks.
Today I picked blueberries and raspberries in my garden, and blackberries in the park. All three taste like summer to me. There’s something about berries. I especially like the ones I forage for, it makes me feel sort of like cheating. Delicious fruit, free for the picking.
