Frozen, Continued (with pictures)

weather.gif

I get this weather forecast email every afternoon. I originally signed up for it so that I’d have pre-warning of frosts in fall 2008. I’ve kept it because it’s often useful. We thought last night was cold at 13F, but tonight the prediction is for only 9 degrees above 0. Wow – I feel like I’m back in Minnesota, except that we don’t have the systems in place to deal with it that my family back there does.

We’ve been scrambling a bit with frozen hoses, freezing waterers, horses that don’t want to eat out of their hay feeder (it’s metal) and cats that never leave their heated beds. But at the same time? We much prefer cold, clear and dry to cold, snowy and wet. And the light? The light has been amazing.

you’re so right about the wonderful light – we are having the same cold, clear weather here on vancouver island, but unfortunately i am stuck inside most of the day. love your photos of the frost though – very beautiful!

  • And the pretty light fools me every time when I sneak out in the afternoon and freeeeeze. Gorgeous pictures!! We were hoping to get some frost pix this weekend – not enough moisture! Cold and dry in Steilacoom.

  • Great photos, Laura. It’s been cold here in the District of Columbia as well. I cringe every time I hear the furnace come on, thinking of all that fuel we’re burning.

  • the light is beautiful. your ability to capture such beauty is quite lovely as well. keep tight – i hope you have a farm helper, cozy gloves and big warms smiles to keep you cheery!

  • Winter and ice can be so pretty, and pose such a threat all at the same time. Your pictures are to be admired – and I am definitely admiring them! The one of the two leaves curled on the ground is a favorite.

  • The light really is amazing. But as someone who’s experiencing the same weather right now, I’d rather it warmed up, at least a little. Prying the lid off my composter last night was NOT my idea of a good time.

  • Fantastic chicken portraits. Your girls are gorgeous!! Here it’s just WAY cold too, and you are right about not being quite prepared for it like they are in the midwest. Keep up that great camera clickin’, nice job. The light is indeed sensational!! Cheers, Bonnie

  • The photos are great. Made me cold just to look at them. It’s chilly in Northern California; supposed to get to 45 today. It’s really sunny which fools you. The dog and cats keep searching for patches of sunlight for their daily sunbaths.

  • Gorgeous pictures – you’ve definitely got the ‘eye’! In Manitoba, we’re about to be -30C (about -20ish F, yes, that’s minus 20 F) It’s too damn cold to go get any pictures!

  • Finally making time to click through and tell you – WOW. those are some gorgeous shots.

I can’t wait to see the farm (and you) in person again soon, although maybe it could be a little warmer?! :D We had a light frost here this morning but nothing like what you’re having.

  • Ditto on the gorgeous photo comments :)

Your daytime highs are our night-time lows….eeek…that’s cold! Do you give your chickens heat at night? This is our first winter with the girls and I worry about them freezing in their drafty coop.

ps. the second chicken pic (the black and brown one) is she a Wyandotte….’cause we have her twin at our house!

  • k :: thanks! We spent Sunday morning working and then snuck in a ride in the cold afternoon. It was beautiful in the woods.

Amanda :: It’s been like that here too every since that day. Frozen, but not really frosty. Must be too dry.

Ed :: I know! Every time the propane stove kicks in I cringe. But I’d rather be warm than rich when it’s this cold.

Shellywoman :: Luckily I’ve got all you mentioned. I’m working on a new pair of mittens for myself though. Need something just a bit warmer.

Mangochild :: I love that photo too.

Amber :: yeah, the water dishes/buckets IN THE BARN are freezing. I’m ready for it to warm up.

Bonnie :: the chooks are pretty, thanks. They’re so friendly right now that they’re easy to photograph.

Kathleen :: the horses make a beeline for the back pasture every morning. took me a couple of days to figure out that’s because the sun hits there first.

Norah :: that’s way too cold for much of anything! Stay warm!

Anita :: thank you. we can’t wait to see you later this month!

Maureen :: the girls don’t have any heat at night. They stay pretty warm in their down coats and huddle together. Most important in this weather is plenty of easily converted calories (corn, scratch, grains, bread) and water.
