Delancey :: bar and kitchen Yesterday wasn’t a big birthday, but it was my birthday nonetheless and sometimes you have to celebrate even the unexciting years in a BIG way. Hence the fun fest that was the last 4 days… On Friday, while I was finishing up a paper at work, Jen, Jeanne and [...] It’s hard to believe that Cody has been here less than six weeks and Whisky less than four. We’ve quickly settled into a routine, sometimes well oiled and sometimes not. Whiskey has packed on the weight faster than anyone expected, without any issues and is showing all the signs of being in perfect health. I’m guessing [...] Yesterday I bought a horse. Of course we also sold our rarely used ski boat (thanks Dad!) so it’s not quite the dramatic decision it seems. At the same time, yesterday I bought a horse. A real live, living, breathing horse that has to come home with us next Sunday. And we have no pasture fence. [...] There’s something about the first asparagus that makes it feel like spring. I didn’t grow that asparagus, I got it at the farmer’s market this morning. It was delicious with just a quick steam. The pork chops were rubbed with sage, thyme, kosher salt, pepper and olive oil and then grilled. The salad included lettuce and [...] Before I became a gardener/farmer I likely wouldn’t have noticed frost this late in the spring, except perhaps as an annoyance as I scraped my windshield. But this morning I took close note of it. I’m hoping it’s our last real frost. Of course it wasn’t all sunshine and sparkles, the frost was just hard enough [...] Tonight was the rare night lately when we didn’t have anything going and the ground was dry enough to do some tilling. Tuesday night I weeded last year’s potato rows – that was some weedy compost I used last year. Anyway, tonight was the night to get some tilling done so that I could get [...] When we decided to move up here it was partly so that we could eventually get horses. Well, it seems that eventually is now! Tonight we bought ourselves a horse trailer. Our purchase either makes us quirky and conservative, or crazy, depending on your perspective. We paid a pittance for a 1973 Circle J two-horse trailer. [...] |
