The chicks are 4 weeks old now and it’s time to get them out to the new broiler shed and give them access to the great outdoors. This weekend is a big push to try to get the project finished so we can move them tomorrow afternoon. Today Mike worked on putting in windows and a [...] With some inexpensive garden netting, Mike and I got protection up over half of the hen yard this afternoon. We’re going to see if it can take the tension before we stretch the other piece over the rest of the yard. There are other, higher quality, options out there. But they’re about 10x the cost [...] We spent most of today outside getting stuff done. Stuff included moving the rest of the plants displaced by the fence/driveway project (details later), sweeping the porch, pulling out the now defunct (and smelly) Brussels Sprouts, setting fence rails and getting the first of the onion seeds into the flat. We took a late afternoon break [...] This is Jake’s hopeful face. The one that says “See how good I’m being? See how well I’m doing down and restraining myself from leaping up, putting my paws on your shoulders and washing your entire face?” Of course, he’s always better at it when there are treats involved. I remember when we got him and [...] We had dinner with Mike’s mom tonight (hi Sharon!) and then came home with her 6 month old puppy Riley. She’s headed to Phoenix for just 2.5 weeks to visit Mike’s sister and Riley is staying with us. He’s 20 pounds of dust mop cuteness and we’re looking forward to having him around. Riley and Jake [...] Here I am, rendering lard. Who’d have thought? I’ll post photos later this week when the whole process is done. I decided to do it on the stovetop in my 9.5 quart dutch oven.
