After a while eggs from your hens stop being so special. At some point they’re eggs and you take them for granted – I find myself forgetting just how bad your average American egg is until confronted with one somewhere else. The kit lens that came with my Rebel two years ago stopped focusing consistently earlier this summer. I’m pretty sure it needs to be cleaned, but as it’s my only lens I decided that I “needed” a new one. I picked up the 17-85mm through my mom when we were in MN in July and [...] It’s so hot right now that I’ll likely be posting this week while we’re hiding inside at night – promise. Plus there’s a lot to say and update you about. First, a story about how it’s like the Nature Channel around here. Monday morning, after getting home from vacation late the night before, I got up [...] We’re in serious broiler countdown around here. Tonight Mike hauled the last bag of broiler feed out to the birds. We fill the feeders at night and tomorrow night instead of filling them we’ll pull them in preparation for Saturday’s butchering. It’s hard to believe that they’re already 12 weeks old. Or at least it is [...] Things are hairy around here right now with well over 100 chickens of various ages and types. They’d be under control except that I’ve got 10 laying hen chicks and Teeny (our stunted broiler) that I can’t find a good spot for. They were holding their own with the broilers until we moved the broilers to [...] Maggie says, “You didn’t even make it to February before you missed a day of the 365 project!” “But Maggie,” I said, “I did in fact take a few photos last night, they just royally sucked and I’m not willing to post any of them here.” She wasn’t taking any excuses though and instead forced me to [...] Cleaning the hen shack would be so much easier if the girls didn’t insist on helping… Usually this time of year I would just be forking out the really dirty straw under the roost bars once a month or so.
