Next Thursday, 100 peepers will be arriving via US Post. It’s about a month earlier than last year because we’re planning to have them grown, butchered and in the freezer before Memorial Day. We’re looking forward to going into summer without feeding them twice a day.

It surprised me the other day to realize that there are 24 of us living on the farmette full time right now. Mike and I, Jake the dog, Sterling and George the cats, Cody and Whiskey the horses and 17 hens of various breeds. No wonder it seems like you’re never alone around here…

When we bought the farmette two years ago, there were plenty of buildings, but the electric service was spotty. Last April we had the panels in the house, pump house and garage replaced and one added in the barn. We also had the service/meter upgraded at the same time.

Knowing it’s going to freeze hard and remembering to unhook and drain the hoses are, apparently, two very different things. The frost-free hydrants survived just fine, and thawed out yesterday morning. But, 24 hours later, the hoses are still frozen really really solid.
