This really has been the strangest spring. It rained and rained and rained all through June, leaving us berryless from our own garden and even from the farmstand. The rain has finally stopped and even though we lost the earliest berries to mold, it seems that we’re finally going to get a crop. We don’t grow [...] After weeks of the weather and other plans conspiring against me getting caught up in the garden, 8 hours with my hands in the dirt today has me feeling much better. Plus, the nights have been so cold and the days so rainy that I’m probably not as far behind as I feel like I [...] I never liked asparagus as a child. I’m not sure why, there was just something about the taste. Sometime in the past 5 or 6 years I’ve discovered it and now I wait all year for it to come into season.We like it blanched, broiled, grilled, roasted, tossed with pesto and pickled. Oh, and wrapped [...] Spring arrived with a bit of a warm bluster around here. It wasn’t quite the day we’d planned, for a lot of reasons, but spring began anyway and it started with cleaning and seedlings. While Mike turned the manure/compost pile and managed the brush burning pile, I organized seedlings and hauled chicken feed various places. So [...] This weekend was enough to make us think that spring had come to Seattle. But alas, it’s just a bit of nice weather that will be replaced by rain again later this week. We worked on the bathroom a bit this weekend, but we also just got out and enjoyed the sun. I pulled some winter [...] I was at Target the other night picking up a couple of things and found this great box. Just what I needed to get the seeds out of the shoe boxes they’ve been living in. In it are all of this year’s seeds, alphabetized by type. It’s always amazing to me that a) I can fill [...] The seeds that I ordered have arrived and I’ve been sorting and organizing them into a new box with the seeds from 2008 and 2009.
