This blog started when we were living on a city lot in Everett, WA. At the time my husband Mike and I lived in a small brick house with 2 large dogs, a cat and 6 hens. We had dreams of moving to our own acreage near the city, but hadn’t had any luck finding a home / land that would work for us.
In late January 2008 the stars aligned (and the real estate prices dropped) and we found a perfect 3.5 acre “farmette” in Arlington, WA. We lucked out and sold our city house in record time. We moved to our new place on February 29, 2008 and have been counting our lucky stars ever since.
Urban Hennery started as a place to write about my experiences raising hens in the city. As a result of making a place for the “girls” in our lives, our approach to food and eating has fundamentally shifted. And so has this blog. Now it is as much about what we’re eating and where it came from as the hens and our everyday lives.
Today this blog is officially the (not so) Urban Hennery but our stories and adventures continue to build on our early experiences and adventures in the city. Join us here as we begin our journey to becoming more self sufficient and less “plugged in”.
Hi, a while back I found your site while looking up chicken coops. Wow, what a small world.
I am from Faribault, Mn, also 30, married and we have a 15 month old boy. We live in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle.
I am building a chicken coop and we are makeing plans for a veggi garden and other green living ideas. I am not offically on the 100 mile diet, but We are starting to hit up more Farmers Markets and I am learning bread baking and trying to work with food the way our grandparents did. Cheaply.
Thanks for being out there in blog o land.

ps check out my site for pictures of the coop in progress.
Hi,
I don’t have a site yet, but I TOO am from Minnesota, just happened on to your site via My Room with a View. Anyway, I think your Penny is a Rhode Island Red, no? Sure looks like one of mine (one of two-Lucy and Marilyn). Enjoying your posts.
Best,
Katherine
Your blog is so great. I love it. I am just getting started — as of a few days ago. Kudos on a site well done!
I just got your comment about the hardy kiwis. They were so yummy - it makes me really bummed out that yours are not producing!
I assume you have a male along with a female? Before you give them away, I bet the folks over at One Green World could be helpful if you sent them an email. Tell them the basics, like where you are located, where the plants are located in your yard, how old they are, etc. If you know the variety or where you bought the plants, that would help them too.
It’s worth a shot! The woman who gave us the orchard tour is one of the owners I think and she seemed ready and willing to help people out that were having problems with specific plants. Let me know how it works out!

Just discovered your blog and will definitely follow along. I think I’ll try your Dark Days challenge. I can put some squash in my coldest closet; that’ll have to serve for a root cellar.
I am in Northfield, MN — I see you have Minnesota roots as well. Keep up the great work.

Great blog! I love it. I hope you don’t mind but I linked it from my blog at http://treehouseparty.blogspot.com/.
Glad to hear your grandmother is doing better. Grandmothers are very important people.

Laura, your blog is incredible! I don’t know where you find the time. Love the hen pics.
I’m just passing through, just wanted to say that I enjoyed peering the keyhole of this blog at your life. Someday I hope to have chickens here on my 5 acres in Fall City, WA.
My husband and I just moved back to cape cod from Boston. We lived very much in the center of the city (Back Bay) and I longed to have chickens. We are back to our small plot (under an acre) here on cape and I am planning on creating from the ground up a mini farm. My chicks are ordered, The chicken house/small barn building is planned, the seedlings are shooting up in my window anticipating the soil. I like your blog and hope to create and keep up with mine with pics. I am literally creating it from the ground up. We have returned for my husband to pursue his writing and I my art. I know that the creation of this mini farm will be evident in my work. I feel one needs the other to grow.
Thanks for a great blog, keep up the good work!
My site isnt’ really up and running yet, but check it out as one day it might be!
